NIGERIA – The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, has charged youths of the region to take advantage of various Federal Government empowerment programmes to better their lot.
The Minister who stated this in response to the lack of participation by most youths of the region said over-dependence on oil and gas activities was not enough to grow the nation’s economy and bridge the gap of unemployment.
The Niger Delta region, the hub of the nation’s hydrocarbon resources as well as a significant contributor to the nation’s foreign earnings, has been battling the challenge of growing youth unemployment and empowerment.
This has, in turn, contributed to some levels of youths restiveness and regular threats to oil and gas facilities by youths especially pipelines vandalism to drive home their demands.
Akpabio said youths of the region have to reposition themselves and take advantage of various Federal Government empowerment policies and programmes.
He said the building of industries and attracting more foreign direct investment would also help in growing the region’s economy.
Akpabio said all hands must be on deck to change the fortunes of youths in the Niger Delta region.
