A list of all the US Presidents who lost their re-election

UNITED STATES – Donald Trump has now joined the list of incumbent US Presidents who lost their reelection after former US Vice-President Joe Biden defeated him in the 2020 US presidential elections.

The defeat makes him the 11th sitting president in US history to lose the White House in a general election campaign.

Mr Trump’s defeat also makes his the first one-term president since the 1990s. The last president to lose a reelection bid was George H.W. Bush in 1992.

Here are the other 10 US Presidents who did not win a re-eclection:

John Adams (1797-1801)

John Adams lost reelection to Thomas Jefferson in 1800. He reportedly left Washington, D.C., “under cover of darkness,” marking the first peaceful transfer of power and setting precedent for presidents to come.

John Quincy Adams (1825-1829)

Adams lost to Andrew Jackson in 1828.

Martin Van Buren (1837-1841)

Van Buren lost in an Electoral College landslide to William Henry Harrison in 1840. Harrison had 240 electoral votes to Van Buren’s 60.

Grover Cleveland (1885-1889)

Benjamin Harrison beat Grover Cleveland in 1888 to become 23rd US President.

Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893)

Grover Cleveland returned to the presidency after defeating Benjamin Harrison in 1892.

William Howard Taft (1909-1913)

Taft lost reelection to Woodrow Wilson in 1912. Taft went on to become a U.S. Supreme Court justice.

Herbert Hoover (1929-1933)

Franklin D. Roosevelt easily defeated Hoover by more than 7 million votes in 1932 as ‘The Great Depression’ gripped the country.

Gerald Ford (1974-1977)

Ford was not elected as US President. He replaced Richard Nixon, who resigned from Office. In 1976, Jimmy Carter defeated Ford for the US presidency.

Jimmy Carter (1977-1981)

Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter in 1980 for the US presidency during the Iranian hostage crisis.

Bill Clinton defeated Bush in 1992 to become the 42nd President of the United States of America.
