OYO, Nigeria – Gubernatorial candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019 general elections in Oyo state, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, has revealed that the coalition between gubernatorial candidates in the state which was facilitated by a former Governor, Senator Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja is the only reason that made his lost the gubernatorial election in 2019 to Governor Seyi Makinde.
Recall that Ladoja facilitated the coalition between candidates of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator Olufemi Lanlehin, Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Barrister Shrafadeen Abiodun Alli, Social Democratic Party (SDP) Chief Bolaji Ayorinde and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Engineer Seyi Makinde few days to the 2019 gubernatorial election.
Makinde later won the March 9th 2019 election.
Adelabu, who lost the election to Makinde, has, however, announced that the coalition is the last straw that broke the camel’s back.
The former Deputy Governor (Operations) of Central Bank (CBN) said that Makinde would not have won the election, if the coalition did not take place.
Adelabu, while addressing journalists at a press conference to herald his 50th birthday in Ibadan, the state capital however insisted that Makinde would be dislodged in 2023 because he has disappointed those who signed an alliance with him.
At the event were former Chairman, Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) Prince Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye, Hon. Wale Sanusi, Hon. Wale Murphy, Hon. Gbenga Olayemi and Dr. Bayo Busari.
Adelabu while speaking, alleged that Makinde’s poor performance will be an opportunity for APC to get more votes.
The APC candidate while explaining the rationale behind his lost, said that he was convinced that Makinde would not score one hundred thousand votes if he (Makinde) did not enter alliance with other candidates.
He added that with unity, APC is poised to dislodge Makinde in 2023.
Adelabu said, “In 2019, few days to the election, there was a coalition. The coalition is the main reason that made APC lost the election. Because in 2015, when he contested under SDP, he scored less than fifty thousand votes (50,000).
“We ran an issue based campaign, we campaign based on issues. I still stand with what I said in 2019 prior to the coalition that Makinde would not have one hundred thousand votes. It was the coalition that made his won the election.
“I am excited about the ongoing reconciliation in APC. I am convinced that APC will dislodge Makinde in 2023. APC will dislodge Makinde in 2023 with unity. With the assemblage of people we have in APC now, we will dislodge Makinde in 2023. I am sure that no party can defeat APC in 2023.
“The coalition is no more there, he has disappointed those whom signed the pact with him prior to the election. Let me tell you that it is a matter of what we can see. One of those who worked for him, Senator Lanlehin is now in APC. The coalition is no more there. And the Governor has not done anything meaningfully in the last one year. We will dislodge him because the coalition is no more there and the poor performance of the Governor will give us opportunity ahead of him”.
