ENGLAND – Former Manchester United defender, Gary Neville, has warned that the club needs new defenders, if they would stand a chance of challenging for the Premier League.
Neville stated this while speaking on Sky Sports, following United’s 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
According to him, the current centre-back pairing of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire, is not good enough.
Wilfried Zaha scored twice, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men began their season with a home loss.
Despite pursuing Jadon Sancho throughout this summer, Donny van de Beek is the only player that has arrived at Old Trafford, with the transfer window closing in two weeks.
However, Neville feels Solskjaer should now prioritize a new defender ahead of Sancho.
“There is going to be big pressure on the back of this,” Neville said.
“We can talk about Jadon Sancho all we like but until Manchester United get a centre-back who can run and defend one-on-ones they are never going to win the league. They are never going to win the Premier League with that centre-back pairing.
“They have to get a mobile, dominant centre-half in alongside either Lindelof or Maguire.”
