EBONYI, Nigeria – A self-acclaimed ‘man of God’ has been remanded in a correction centre in Ebonyi State for allegedly raping a 21-year-old woman.
The ‘clergy’, one Marvelous Agu, 23, was on Friday dragged before by an Ebonyi State Magistrate’s Court, for allegedly raping one Miss Agnes Ovai in an uncompleted building while pretending to prophesise on her.
It was gathered that the accused person committed the offence at No. 5 Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Abakaliki in the Abakaliki Local Government Area of the state in July 2019.
Agu was arraigned before the Magistrate’s Court, on one count of unlawful sexual intercourse, on Friday.
The Police Prosecutor, ASP Mathias Eze, told the court that the offence was punishable under section 358 of the Criminal Code Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.
The charge read,
“That you Marvelous Agu ‘m’, sometime in the month of July 2019, at No. 5 Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Abakaliki, within the Abakaliki Magisterial District did, while pretending to prophesise, unlawfully had canal knowledge of one Agnes Ovai, a 21 years old girl and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 358 of the Criminal Code Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.”
On arraignment, the Defense Counsel, E.O. Ekuma, applied to the court that his client be admitted to bail.
But the bail application was not granted.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Nnenna Onuoha, said the matter was beyond the jurisdiction of the court to entertain.
Onuoha directed that the accused person be remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Abakaliki, while his case file should be forwarded to the office of Director of Public Prosecutions, for necessary advice.
She adjourned the case till March 6, 2020, for report of compliance.
