LIMPOPO, South Africa – News reaching us from our correspondent in Limpopo, Thomo Nkgadima reveal that two siblings have died in a ditch filled with water and sand in Limpopo.
The incident which happened yesterday afternoon at Mulende township near Thohoyandou involved two siblings (a boy and a girl) who were crossing a makeshift bridge when one of them (the girl) fell into the ditch while the brother on a bid to save her jumped in but sadly both drowned in the process.
According an eye witness who spoke to our correspondent, four siblings were walking from one section of the township to another section when 8 years old girl, Adivhaho Mathikhi suddenly fell from the bridge and plunged into a water-filled ditch. His 10 years old brother Nthakadzeni Mathikhi in a bid to rescue his little sister jumped into the ditch but because of the moody condition of the ditch both of them drowned.
The two out of the four siblings who were shocked by what happened but could not do anything to help their drowning siblings fled home to notify their parents
Limpopo provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed the incident and said that police are investigating the mysterious deaths of two siblings who lost their lives yesterday after falling into a makeshift bridge which is under construction at Mulende township near Thohoyandou. He said the cause of death at this stage is not clear whether they died as a result of falling from the bridge or were drowned in the ditch.
